I am pleased to announce the publication of my white paper:

CalShuttle — The Future of Bay Area Transit:

On-demand, point-to-point, fast, safe, 24-hour shuttle rapid transit.

By the early 2030s, shared autonomous vehicles (SAVs) will have established themselves as a safe, reliable, comfortable, and efficient mode of transportation. Tens of thousands of autonomous Shuttles operated by private vendors will provide transit services to the counties of San Francisco, San Mateo, and Santa Clara. CalShuttle, a three-county agency, will monitor and provide services to these private vendors

Key CalShuttle characteristics will include: on-demand; point-to-point (first and last mile is built in); 24-hour availability; and scalability.

Key impacts will include: reduced traffic and traffic congestion; minimized infrastructure costs through reuse of existing street network; reduced auto-related deaths, injuries, and health care costs; reduced family car ownership cost; improved mobility for older and disabled residents; and the conversion of parking facilities to other purposes.

Financial impacts will include: reduced capital expenditures by over $25 billion; reduced operational costs through minimized labor costs and spreading costs across multiple passengers and trips; the transfer of all capital and operational costs to private company Shuttle operators, eliminating government subsidies for transit; and profitable operation at $0.11 per passenger mile, or a fare of $2.30 for a typical 20.3 mile commute distance.
